If a woman asks if you have a girlfriend, there is a decent chance she is checking whether you are available.
Not guaranteed.
Women ask about relationships for all kinds of reasons.
But if the question appears out of nowhere, she seems especially interested in your answer, and the two of you have already been flirting a little, I would definitely notice.
You are talking about work, music, whatever.
Then she casually drops:
So, do you have a girlfriend?
Casually.
Very casually.
Almost suspiciously casually.
You say no.
And suddenly she smiles.
Well.
That answer may have been exactly what she was hoping to hear.
The way she asks matters
There is:
Does your girlfriend come here too?
Maybe she simply assumes you have one.
Then there is:
Wait, are you single?
That feels a little different.
Especially when it comes with a smile.
Or she asks:
How are you still single?
Now we are getting somewhere.
Women do not always come right out and say:
I think you are attractive and would like to know whether there is another woman who might object to me flirting with you.
They gather information.
Your relationship status is fairly useful information.
Watch her reaction when you say you are single
This may tell you more than the original question.
You say:
No, I am not seeing anyone.
Does she just say:
Oh.
Then move on?
Could mean nothing.
Does she smile?
Look surprised?
Ask another question?
Really?
Interesting.
Or:
Why not?
Now she seems considerably more invested in your romantic situation than someone making random conversation.
Sometimes the little burst of happiness on her face gives the game away before she says anything else.
“I thought you had a girlfriend” can be a sneaky way of finding out
This one is common.
She says:
I thought you had a girlfriend.
Maybe she genuinely did.
Or maybe she has found a very convenient way to ask without technically asking.
You correct her:
No, I am single.
Now she has the information she wanted without having to risk sounding interested.
Pretty efficient.
If the conversation suddenly becomes flirtier afterward, you can probably connect a few dots.
If she asks what kind of women you date, things are getting less subtle
The conversation starts with:
Do you have a girlfriend?
Then:
What kind of girls do you usually go for?
Sir.
At some point you are allowed to consider the possibility that she is checking whether she qualifies.
Maybe she asks whether you date blondes.
Older women.
Younger women.
Women with kids.
Women from a certain background.
If the questions start sounding oddly specific to her own situation, that is even more interesting.
She may be trying to figure out whether you would see her as an option.
The age question can give her away too
Maybe there is an age difference.
She asks whether you are single.
Then eventually:
Would you ever date an older woman?
Or:
Have you dated someone younger than you?
That probably did not come out of nowhere.
She may be wondering whether the age gap she has already noticed would bother you.
If you are interested, you do not need to deliver a TED Talk about age gap relationships.
Just say:
If I liked her, sure.
Done.
You have now handed her a very useful piece of information.
A woman friend asking can mean the friendship is shifting
This is where guys often get confused.
You have known her for years.
She knows you date.
You have talked about relationships before.
Then recently she starts asking more specific questions.
Are you seeing anyone right now?
What happened with that girl you were talking to?
Would you ever date a friend?
That last one deserves a little attention.
Maybe she is simply curious.
But if she has also started texting more, sitting closer, complimenting you, or wanting more time alone, the questions may be part of a bigger change.
Friendships can become flirty before either person admits it.
If she asks about one specific woman, jealousy might be involved
Suppose she says:
Who was that girl you were with?
Maybe she is just asking.
Now suppose she asks follow up questions.
Are you dating her?
Do you like her?
How did you meet?
She seems oddly invested.
Could be curiosity.
Could also be that seeing you with another woman made her realize she cares more than she thought.
Do not immediately label her jealous.
You cannot read her mind.
But I would notice whether her mood changes once she learns the other woman is just a friend.
Sometimes relief is not particularly subtle.
What if she tells you she is single right after asking?
This is one of my favorites.
She asks:
Do you have a girlfriend?
You say no.
Then, without much prompting:
Me neither.
Thank you for the update.
She may be letting you know the door is open.
Especially if she smiles, holds eye contact, and the conversation suddenly gets a little warmer.
People often volunteer their availability when they want the other person to do something with that information.
You are allowed to do something with it.
She may be trying to see whether flirting with you is safe
A woman may already be attracted to you but not want to flirt heavily if she thinks you are taken.
Fair.
So before she turns anything up, she checks.
Single?
Good.
Now maybe she gets closer.
Teases you more.
Touches your arm while talking.
Asks for your number.
Suddenly seems very interested in whether you are free this weekend.
That sequence makes much more sense once you realize the girlfriend question was probably step one.
If she asks while the two of you are alone, it can feel more personal
Context again.
A group is discussing relationships and somebody asks whether you have a girlfriend.
Nothing unusual.
You and one woman are alone after everyone else leaves.
Conversation gets personal.
She looks at you and asks:
So are you seeing anyone?
Different energy.
Especially if nothing in the conversation required the question.
Sometimes you can feel when someone is asking because the answer matters to them.
Trust that feeling, but wait for the next clue before deciding you have solved everything.
If she already knows you are single but keeps bringing it up, that is interesting
Maybe you told her weeks ago.
Yet she says things like:
I cannot believe you are still single.
Or:
You really need a girlfriend.
Or:
What are you looking for in someone?
She clearly remembers your status.
Now she wants more details.
Why?
Maybe she is trying to set you up with someone.
That happens.
But unless a mystery friend appears fairly soon, I would at least consider whether she is asking for herself.
“What are you looking for in a woman?” is basically the advanced version
This is not just checking availability anymore.
Now she wants the job description.
Maybe she is curious.
Maybe the two of you are having a genuine conversation about dating.
Or maybe she is quietly comparing your answer with herself.
If she asks this while flirting with you, I would keep my answer normal.
Do not invent some impossible dream woman.
Tell her what actually matters to you.
Funny.
Kind.
Easy to talk to.
Adventurous.
Whatever is true.
Then watch whether she suddenly says:
That sounds like me.
Sometimes people really do make this easy.
What if she asks why you are single?
This question can be flirty, but it can also be a little loaded depending on how she says it.
There is the suspicious version:
Why are you single?
Like she expects a criminal record to appear.
Then there is:
How is someone like you still single?
That is basically a compliment wearing a question costume.
She may be telling you she thinks you are attractive, dateable, or both.
A good answer?
I just have not met the right person yet.
Simple.
Then if you are feeling brave:
Maybe I am talking to her.
Please use responsibly.
If you like her, flirt back a little
Guys sometimes receive a fairly obvious opening and then answer it like they are completing a government form.
She says:
Do you have a girlfriend?
You say:
No.
Silence.
Amazing work.
If you like her, give her something.
No. Why, are you asking for yourself?
That is playful and direct.
Or:
No. Should I?
Or simply:
No, I am single. What about you?
Now the conversation can actually move somewhere.
You do not need a perfect line.
You just need to stop behaving as though she asked whether you own a printer.
If you want something less bold
Try:
Nope. Why do you ask?
This is probably the safest response.
You answer her question and hand it straight back.
Now she gets to explain.
Maybe she says:
Just curious.
Maybe.
Maybe she laughs and gets a little shy.
Also useful.
Or perhaps she says:
I was wondering if you wanted to get a drink sometime.
Beautiful.
Look what happens when people use words.
If you are not interested, do not accidentally turn it into flirting
You can simply answer:
No, I am single.
Then move on.
You do not have to ask:
Why, do you want to be my girlfriend?
if you have zero interest in her.
That sounds obvious, but guys sometimes flirt automatically because the attention feels good.
Then later they are shocked when the woman thought something was happening.
You can enjoy being wanted without encouraging something you do not want.
What if you do have a girlfriend?
Say so.
Easy.
Do not answer:
It is complicated.
unless it genuinely is and you are prepared to explain what complicated means.
If you are in a relationship, acting mysteriously single because an attractive woman is flirting with you tends to create very predictable problems.
You can still be friendly.
You can still enjoy talking to her.
But if she is checking whether you are available, give her accurate information.
What if she asks whether you are happy with your girlfriend?
That is more personal.
Maybe you have been discussing your relationship already.
Fine.
But if she randomly asks:
Are you happy with her?
while clearly flirting with you, I would notice.
She may be trying to figure out whether there is an opening.
That does not mean you should create one.
If you are unhappy in your relationship, deal with that relationship because of what is happening inside it, not because someone attractive has appeared nearby.
Very boring advice.
Still true.
A woman can ask if you are single and still only mean it platonically
Absolutely.
Maybe she has a friend she wants you to meet.
Maybe the subject came up naturally.
Maybe she is the kind of person who knows everyone’s relationship status within fifteen minutes of meeting them.
One question is not proof.
This is why you look for the follow through.
Does she flirt after learning you are single?
Does she start asking personal questions?
Does she seek you out again?
Does she make an effort to spend time with you?
Or does she say:
Great, my friend Jessica would love you.
Plot twist.
If she asks for your number next, you can probably stop wondering
She finds out you are single.
You talk a little longer.
Then:
Give me your number.
Okay.
Maybe she wants to be friends.
Maybe.
But if the conversation already feels flirty and she is creating a way to contact you outside wherever you met, interest becomes pretty likely.
Now you do not need to decode the girlfriend question anymore.
You need to decide whether you are going to text her.
If she starts texting you that night, even better
Maybe she sends:
Nice meeting you 🙂
Then another message follows.
You start joking.
The conversation keeps going.
She asks what you are doing this weekend.
At this point, please stop telling yourself she is probably just being polite.
Could still be friendly.
But you have enough green lights to suggest coffee or a drink.
Sometimes guys wait for a woman to practically issue a written invitation before risking rejection.
You can survive asking.
What if she asks and then starts talking about her ex?
That can cool the romantic interpretation a little.
Maybe she genuinely wanted dating advice.
Or she feels comfortable talking to you and sees you as a friend.
But context still matters.
A woman can mention an ex while also being interested in someone new.
Listen to why she brought him up.
Is she clearly still emotionally wrapped up in that relationship?
Or is she basically saying:
I am single now.
Very different conversation.
If you are into her, look for effort beyond the question
This is where you stop analyzing one sentence.
Does she initiate conversations?
Smile when she sees you?
Touch your arm?
Remember random things you told her?
Ask when she will see you again?
Make herself available when you suggest a plan?
That is a much stronger picture.
Attraction rarely lives in one isolated clue.
It shows up through repeated little choices.
The easiest move is still asking her out
I know.
Disappointingly simple.
You can spend three weeks wondering why she asked whether you have a girlfriend.
Or you can say:
Want to grab a drink sometime?
If she says yes enthusiastically, excellent.
If she says no, you have your answer and can continue with your life.
The whole point of noticing signals is not to keep collecting them forever.
Eventually they are supposed to help you actually do something.
So why does a woman ask if you have a girlfriend?
She may simply be curious.
She may want to set you up.
But if she asks unexpectedly, seems pleased when you say you are single, starts asking what kind of women you like, tells you she is single too, and keeps flirting afterward, there is a good chance she is interested.
If you like her, do not answer like you are at customs.
Give her something back.
Because sometimes:
Do you have a girlfriend?
is not really a question about your relationship status.
It is a woman quietly checking whether the position is currently available.
